Vertex GPHE50 100 Knocking Sound

by Frank Wild
(Wilmette, IL)

Our gas-fired Vertex water heater has developed a knocking sound every time it fires up. The unit is about 3 years old. The sound is coming from within the hot water tank, not from any exterior connection. The knock sounds like pipe reacting to thermal expansion. Since it is part of the plumbing of the house, the sound travels through the pipes. What is the cause and possible solution?

I feel your pain - Having the same issue
by: Anonymous

Hi Frank, I just put in a post myself for what appears to be the same, or at the least similar, issue. My GPHE-50 was installed in Dec.2010 and up until recently I had no issues with it. Now I can't sleep at night and it makes popping noises everytime it runs.

Did you every get any resolution to your isssue?
