Problem with my Eccotemp L5 portable water heater

by Joy
(US)

I have purchased Eccotemp portable water heater, L5 model a while ago. Since than it was working well, untill few days ago. We went for camping, me and my family of three; and after I unpack and try to take a short shower, I have noticed that there is no hot water. L5 unit will start, but few seconds after, it will shut off for unknown reason. My propane tank is new, I just bought it before our trip. Maybe something happened when I was moving the unit around, when packaging.

Can you help? I am so close to buy a Coleman and get rid of Eccotemp.

Joy

Burner goes out easily
by: Anonymous

I recently bought Ecotemp 7 with the pump that was included. Was disappointed out of the box because I did not have every part included to operate it directly out of the box. Finally got everything going and have used it several times but in very disappointed with it, because it goes out extremely easy. It barely takes a slight breeze. I have followed all instructions thoroughly. It makes no difference. I no longer wish to use it even after just a few times because it's not worth the hassle. If there is a flue pipe or something I can add to the top to keep it from doing so I would appreciate some advice. I even built an enclosure to try to block the wind from it and it still makes no difference. That was a lot of money for something so inferior.

WATER POURING OUT
by: Anonymous

Is there something I turn to keep the water from pouring out the bottom when I turn on the spigot? I haven't used this water heater in over a year and can't remember. Thanks!

QUIT WORKING
by: YOOPER

We had a plumber install our on demand EccoTemp propane hot water heater, I had the plumber install a prefill filter just in case of sediment issues, on the intake water from our well......it worked fine for about 1 month, then the hot water turned cold, and the water flow, reduced to only cold water only.......needless to say we are asking for a full refund, as the unit did not perform after 1 month of use.
I have had a takagi on demand hot water heater for our sauna/ toilet/ laundry building, and it has worked flawlessly for over 5 years with no problems.

Yes the black ring was the culprit. I put it back in where for the propane connection. Now I have heat!

Nighttime Blues
by: frustrated gal

It's making me crazy.... works great during the day, but I really need the hot water at night and i can NEVER get it to work. I keep trying new adjustments but night time is NO! I'm in california, bay area. It only gets in the 50's so it's not like it's freezing.

Any suggestions?

Eccotemp L5 - Explosive issue!
by: Gareth

Hi,

I have also purchased an Eccotemp L5 water heater, today I used it for the first time and also had issues. Everytime I started to turn up the incoming water pressure on the unit the burners immediately shut off, this kept happening until suddenly the water outlet valve at the bottom on the unit blew clean off, impressively it was not the Horlick fitting the gave but the thread of the connector it fits onto. Needless to say panic ensued but all is OK now,

Any ideas?

Thanks

Gareth

How to fix Eccotemp L5 water heater
by: Zee from water heater reviews

Eccotemp water heater, L5 model is one of the most selling models, but unfortunately like other appliances has problems.

Here is the troubleshooting guide for Eccotemp L5 model and your hot water problem.

- One of the common problems, why your Eccotemp L5 water heater turns off after successful lighting, is because of the insufficient pressure. If you have the old L5 model, there is a washer inside the brass fitting on the end of the regulator hose which goes into the heater. If it fell off just push it back in. Now the sufficient pressure will sustain the combustion. New model doesn't include this washer.

- If there is a high wind and water heater is not protected, it will blow out the flame.

- Recommended water pressure should be provided and kept above the recommended minimum. Required minimum is 2 l per minute and water pressure 25 psi. Recommended water pressure is between 40 and 60 psi.

- If the air is trapped inside the propane tank, the gas-air mixture is messed up. The air from the propane tank should be purged by cycling the unit ON and OFF several times, or by opening the tank valve for several seconds and let the gas escape along with the air mixed with the gas.

- If the ignition sensors are bent, they are not straight, and/or too close to the burner, then you can straighten/adjust them with pliers.

- If the thermocouple is too high or too low the gas valve won't stay open. The thermocouple should be flush with the hole in the heat exchanger.
