flame goes out often, therefore no hot water on Rheem Fury

by Patrick Philips
(Montgomery, AL)

We have a Rheem Fury gas, Model 22V40SF, Serial RHLN0708504084, mfg 07/2008, installed July 2008.

December, 2010 pilot went out and was relit. Stayed lit for some time went out. Plumber relit. Went out. Plumber relit. Went out. Last time was yesterday,January 29, it had been on for approximately 36 hours. Relit today, Sunday January 30th. At this time, 7:38 Sunday evening is on and the water is hot.

Plumber shortened the vent stack on the roof thinking it might be air/wind getting in and blowing the flame out. But this hardly seems feasible in that the heater was working fine until December, 2010, a period of approx. 2.5 yrs from installation. Everything else seems okay, no leaks, no problem with temperature of water, etc.

Looking at our neighbors house who also has tank in attic her vent is very short in comparison to ours, even though our plumber shortened our very tall vent to a much shorter one. It is now approximately 1-1/2 ft tall.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

My 22DV40F burner goes out too
by: Tom T

My 40 Gallon ream is doing the exact same thing yours is. By looking at the flame you can tell the combustion chamber is not getting enough air. How is air get into the unit with the bottom and sides completly sealed? Have you gotten a viable answer yet? Thx.
